Make Teaching of Humanities Mandatory

Asima Ranjan Parhi

While undergoing the severe mental agony of the ‘Delhi act of shame’ through print, electronic and social media I suddenly reflected on the wider and far-reaching measures like social awareness and curricular reform suggested by the intelligentsia. A year back in an International Conference on ‘Transcending Disciplinary Decadence’ (FCT, Jaipur, 16-19 December 2011) I presented a paper on Decolonizing the curriculum and focused on mandatory teaching of Humanities and specifically literature in all streams across all age groups and at all levels (primary, secondary, tertiary all inclusive). It should not be read as an idealistic view of an individual representing all students of literature but a plea from all those who understand literature irrespective of whatever profession or section of society they belong to. I have a niece who after her highly professional expertise in nuclear and theoretical physics during the day hours, sits through the pages of Dostoevsky and Thomas Hardy at night not missing a single chance to correlate  and discover the way Physics and Poetry have an amazing chemistry between them !

The very approach of even our educated professionals towards human relationship is rotten at the root. How many people in society look at man-woman relationship beyond the prescribed stereotypes of self imposed boundaries? How often we have heard about the sleazy, lascivious, voyeuristic remarks from people over the personal association of male-female academics, students, researchers in their professional pursuits and even personal relation since our student days till now on! Even today when we claim of our largest democracy and technological advancement, how many places across our country can claim to have maintained a truly democratic and free atmosphere to allow the faculty and students further their academic growth on the basis of a personal cum professional autonomy? There is a tendency to misunderstand language, literature and representation of love in many great works that we read. People often maintain the view that works of literature generally seem to be a domain of fantasy, idealism and inadequate in dealing with a real life problem. To sneak into relationships under the name of cultural, ethical cover is misleading and unhealthy. When we teach our postgraduate students about Michel Foucault’s concept of Discourse and history, they are thrilled to find that philosophy and intellectual capital are not abstract eccentricity but contain the epitome of remedy for all social ills. People in big cities outside need to emulate the democratic and cosmopolitan approach of the north eastern states towards man-woman relationship rather than discoursing over the prescribed size of a woman’s dress! My scant engagement with science and technology as well as literature has inevitably forced me to plead for making efforts to bring a change in our curriculum of Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering, Management studies and in all aspects of life starting from parenting, cultural and religious practices if they appear chauvinistic to the market, from media front to the kitchens, from villages to cities in order to sensitize people on gender issues. The need to have a compulsory comprehensive course of literature that contains Classics (I refuse to accept and equate a Shakespeare or an Upendra Bhanja ( A famous and Classic Odia Poet) with the ‘any writing is literature brigade’), be it in writing, movies or music right from childhood is one befitting remedy to tackle the overall disappearance of compassion. It is funny that small children see their parents pluck a basket full of flowers for daily worship (even one flower would do!) and then see a placard elsewhere, ‘Don’t pluck flowers’. Plucking flowers from the blooming trees certainly amount to outrage the physical modesty of our green tree and green earth. Literature would at least prove to the young minds the simple fact that gods may be loved, questioned, played with as a mate! Why fear and bribe them with a heap of innocent petals?

This package of literature would teach them the best of human rights and worst of human brutality and its consequences. They would be in touch with the extremely precious human feelings like pain, remorse, love, compassion and fellow feeling. It is with such endeavors that I was taught literature (I remember my father moving the whole class into tears while teaching us a poem that would arouse love, compassion and honour for women, ‘Ashrame Prabhata’ by Gangadhar Meher, ‘The story of Prithviraj and Sanjukta’ by Sister Nivedita and ‘Gramapatha’ by Binod Nayak) and take the privilege of vouching for the same. It is the tears that we need to implant among our adolescents and youths today no matter how may smart phones they have been glued to, and it is possible, thereby paying a humble tribute to India’s brave daughters who have been facing such brutalities over the years. Sports education

Be it at the grass-root level in schools, semi-professional coaching academies or elite clubs for the top level, efforts are being made to promote sports. In fact, sports personalities, coaching centres and leading companies are making their own contributions to the field of sports.

In a latest development, Tata Consultancy Services and HDFC have collaborated to invest in a sports education start-up. More than a decade ago, both the organizations had developed a joint venture called Intelenet for business process outsourcing.

In promoting sports education in schools, the Kids Out Of Home prog is expected to equip schools with a blend of structured curriculum, technology and infrastructure to motivate kids to come out and play.

It is believed that India has no dearth of sportsperson. But to  train the sportspersons, India needs more and more trained coaches to give athletes tips and shortcuts to attain maximum performance with less amount of work.  The key here is for Indian sportspersons to train harder, faster and more importantly, smarter! This is only possible when trainers who have formal education and training in sports take the responsibility  with determined mind to produce  excellent sportspersons.

Anger harms

Dear Editor,

Anger is such a bad thing; it can wipe out an entire family, a village, a tribe, even a race including the angry man himself. Therefore, no matter how justified one’s anger may be, one should not let his anger explode.  Here is a suggestion: If you are sitting on the mouth of your volcano like boiling ‘anger’ then, close your eyes, bite your teeth and hold back your anger for few seconds. Your anger will cool down. Your anger will not be so devastating and heinous. Thus the devastating effect of anger can be prevented.

The best example of devastating effect of ‘anger’ is-The entire family members of second last king of Nepal was completely wiped out by the king’s own younger son. He, himself, also died later. Had he held back his anger for few seconds  it would not have happened. Who is the loser in such a situation?  The angry man himself and gainer is his enemy.

Dedo Ete

Check issuing of illegal ST certificate

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily I would like to bring to the focus of AAPSU regarding issuing of ST certificate to non-APST in some parts of state. I have noticed that many people residing in Tawang and West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh has gained ST status though they don’t belong to any tribe. Rather they have migrated mainly from Tibet, and are actually the Tibetan refugees residing in India. As far as the Chakma and Hajong refugees are concerned they have not been able to get ST status till date. The Tibetan refugee must also be debarred from gaining it. It is my sincere and utmost request to AAPSU to look into the matter. Due to this problem many APST candidate loses the opportunity to avail privilege and provisions provided by the state and union government.

Yours’

Jumli
